If you're unemployed, looking for a job IS your job

Losing a job can be disheartening. Searching for a NEW job can be downright depressing, especially if you've been out of work for an extended period. But, here's the thing:

You have to treat your job search like it's a full time job, in and of itself, because that's what it IS.

That means getting up at 7am, Monday through Friday, and getting yourself in gear for the day. This will do two things right off the bat.

  • Keep your work habits from deteriorating, so that when you DO find land a position, you will be able to seamlessly transition back into work mode very easily. The more you let yourself stray away from keeping regular hours and performing work-like tasks, the more difficult time you'll have making that transition. And besides, it will look REAL good during the job interview if you can show that you haven't lost your ability to go back to work and get things done from day one.
  • Keep your state of mind from deteriorate as well. Staying busy will keep you from falling into fits of anxiety and depression, which will likely cause you to give UP keeping that work-like schedule. Bad habits will start to form, which will hinder your ability to do your best in your search for new employment. You will also be left with a feeling of accomplishment at the end of the day. Aka: You actually got something DONE. (even if you didn't find a job that day)
So, get out there! Tweak that resume! Make those phone calls! Keep up on your contacts and networking!
