Veterans need help NOW!
http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2012-05-24/veterans-face-ruin-awaiting-benefits-as-wounded-swamp-va.html
Whether you were for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, or against them, there is NO reason that returning injured and disabled soldiers should have to wait as long as they do for VA benefits. If the US government can drop a throwaway $535 million loan onto Solyndra, as well at 13 OTHER bad loans to 'green' companies, it surely can find the money and manpower to get these veterans the financial resources they need to address their medical needs.
Not doing so really IS a crime...

The college myth
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/mobileweb/dr-bonnie-snyder/unemployment-college-graduates-_b_1536195.html
After reading the above story, I had to really shake my head. Growing up, I was told that I needed to get good grades and go to college so that I could get a good job. Funny thing is, my father never even graduated high school, and he managed to raise not one, but THREE families in his lifetime. Sure, the job he did was back breaking work, but he made enough money to keep a roof over my head (along with my mother and two brothers) and put food on the table every night. My brothers followed in his footsteps career wise, and they both now own a home, several cars, and are completely debt free. (no families as of yet, though)
As for me, I attended college myself, but never graduated. I can't really say it was a wasted education, because NO learning is a waste, but as it turned out, I managed to secure myself good paying jobs simply by networking through friends and family. Even if I HAD graduated, chances are I wouldn't have done a whole lot better for myself then what I've accomplished up to now. Barring some less then optimal life choices, I probably would be just as financially well off today as my siblings. But, that's another story...
Now, I'll grant you that if I had chosen a career field such as chemical engineering, or pharmacist, I DEFINITELY would have benefited from a college degree, as these graduates are in heavy demand. But, unless you plan on specializing in one of these high demand careers, or are going into an executive position, it would appear that having a college education isn't exactly mandatory.
A good network, and street smarts can serve you just as well.

Branding yourself to help get a job
In an age where hundreds of people are applying for every single decent new job opening, companies are using information they gather from social media sites more then ever to aid in their applicant selection process. What if you could USE that to your advantage? Sure, a computer program can be used to ferret out resumes that display the proper 'keywords', or to weed out those with too many spelling or grammatical errors. But, a HUMAN has to investigate your Facebook page and read your Tweets. With a little advice and effort, you can make your social media presence SHINE, and effectively create your own personal BRAND.
While your friends are posting Saturday afternoon pool party pictures, you can spruce up your profile and present images of yourself being presented with awards and accolades. When your buddies Tweet about their last hot date, you can engage in polite and informed conversations on professional topics with like minded people already in the workforce. Whether it be Google+, Linkedin, Blogger, or a myriad of other social media sites, creating a professional, intelligent presence for yourself will put you WAY ahead of the competition when it comes time to compete for a new job.
And, the BEST reason to brand yourself online? Because those who are competing with you for that next job are already DOING IT!

More ECB unconventional easing may be needed: IMF
http://www.marketwatch.com/story/more-ecb-unconventional-easing-may-be-needed-imf-2012-05-17
How much lower can you move interest rates?? Last time I looked, a 30 year home loan could be had for just under 3.8%. That's just AMAZING! I can remember when consumers were getting about that rate on their passbook savings accounts. Now you're lucky to get 1% on a money market account. There's only so much easing reserve banks can do. It's not that far above FREE now.

It isn't just the oil company execs who make good money
http://money.cnn.com/2012/05/10/news/economy/oil_workers/index.htm
Even the lowest paid laborer on an oil rig pulls in a wage equal to the median US income level. Specialized positions out in the field can make $100,000+. Also, the truckers who deliver supplies for oil industry installations make $20 an hour or more. It's hard work, but the pay is pretty good.

Spinning the Job numbers
http://www.marketwatch.com/story/us-jobless-claims-flat-in-first-week-of-may-2012-05-10
What really gets to me is the way a lot of the media tries to spin the weekly and monthly jobs data to find ANY little grain of positive information to fawn over. The number of weekly new jobless claims was essentially unchanged last week from the REPORTED number 2 weeks ago. (which, of course, was REVISED upward today) Yet, to read a lot of the headlines, you'd think the latest data was GOOD news. (it isn't)
If you were paying attention, you'd notice that the 367,000 new jobless benefit claims reported for last week was actually 2,000 GREATER then the ORIGINAL reported number 2 weeks ago (365,000). But, that wouldn't have looked so good, so let's just revise the 2 week old number HIGHER, and then it looks like we've dropped new claims instead of increasing them. Really? REALLY???
Remember when April unemployment came out, and there were actually MORE people on unemployment then in March, but the unemployment RATE dropped to 8.1 percent?? Come on, now... Even as a layman, I can see through THAT charade. The fact remains, if you counted EVERYONE who is of working age, who would LIKE to work but currently isn't working, the unemployment rate would be something north of 11 percent. And don't EVEN get me started about the number of people who are UNDERemployed.
That's a whole other story...

If you're unemployed, looking for a job IS your job
Losing a job can be disheartening. Searching for a NEW job can be downright depressing, especially if you've been out of work for an extended period. But, here's the thing:
You have to treat your job search like it's a full time job, in and of itself, because that's what it IS.
That means getting up at 7am, Monday through Friday, and getting yourself in gear for the day. This will do two things right off the bat.
You have to treat your job search like it's a full time job, in and of itself, because that's what it IS.
That means getting up at 7am, Monday through Friday, and getting yourself in gear for the day. This will do two things right off the bat.
- Keep your work habits from deteriorating, so that when you DO find land a position, you will be able to seamlessly transition back into work mode very easily. The more you let yourself stray away from keeping regular hours and performing work-like tasks, the more difficult time you'll have making that transition. And besides, it will look REAL good during the job interview if you can show that you haven't lost your ability to go back to work and get things done from day one.
- Keep your state of mind from deteriorate as well. Staying busy will keep you from falling into fits of anxiety and depression, which will likely cause you to give UP keeping that work-like schedule. Bad habits will start to form, which will hinder your ability to do your best in your search for new employment. You will also be left with a feeling of accomplishment at the end of the day. Aka: You actually got something DONE. (even if you didn't find a job that day)
So, get out there! Tweak that resume! Make those phone calls! Keep up on your contacts and networking!

HR departments MAY have to alter their standards to get employees into their companies
After seeing some articles that have come out recently, and having chatted with a few people on the subject, it would appear that hiring managers looking to fill positions within today's companies MAY have to change their mindset to get the best people for the job. Company heads complain that they can't find qualified prospects to fill technical positions, yet HR departments are disqualifying good applicants based on less then perfect credit ratings or length of breaks in employment. Something has to give here.
Hiring managers could be VERY selective about who they hired when the recent recession was at it's worst. There were 50 or 100 applicants for every open position, and HR people could be extremely choosy about who they called back for an interview. But now, many people who WERE looking for a job at that time have either gotten work elsewhere, retired, or simply given up looking for any work at all. The pool of good job candidates is smaller then it once was, and many of those people HAVE been unemployed for lengthy periods. That doesn't mean they should be discounted outright, without even so much as a callback for an interview.
If corporate execs and managers want good people working for them, they need to hold their HR department's feet to the fire, and make sure EVERY good candidate at least gets a shot at getting hired.

So, what's YOUR goal in life?
I ask this question from, perhaps, a slightly different perspective then most. It's a well known fact that truly successful people ALWAYS have goals and priorities, and a plan to achieve both. Well, up until very recently, I had no need for any plan like that, because I had not SET any goals for myself. Frankly, life was just carrying me along, and I let it take me where it would. I had spent a lot of time living my life for other people, and not really thinking about myself or what I wanted. Frankly, I didn't even KNOW what I wanted from life.
That all changed recently, when I met someone who challenged me to think outside myself; to think BIGGER. Now I find myself with a purpose, and a REAL reason for waking up every day and doing all the hard things right along with the little things. Was my life meaningless before 6 months ago? No, not by a long shot. To my children, I mean a LOT. To my other family members and friends, I am loved and and well respected. But NOW, I have decided to find out just how far I can take this life. I have decided to take control of it, instead of it controlling me.
But, you probably figured that out by the number of times you can count the word *I* in the last two paragraphs.
So, what's my goal in life? To build a business that helps put the unemployed back to work. To learn how to create that business from scratch, and pass that knowledge on to others. (such as my children, if that's what they choose to do) To build relationships with people that will fortify me (and them) for the rest of my life. To make this world a slightly better place to live for both myself and everyone else I come in contact with. That's that I want to do.
